Name: Juan Sebastian Orjuela

IG: juancho.the.student.vet

Medical Title/Credentials: 3rd year Veterinary Student

School/Program: Ontario Veterinary College - Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

Favorite Hobby: Traveling the world! I have backpacked 16 different countries so far.

Why did you choose this profession? I’ve had a passion for veterinary medicine from a very young age. When I was a little kid in Colombia, I used to bring home stray animals to try and "cure" them… lol. Becoming a doctor has always been my ultimate dream. As a future veterinarian I aspire to become a leader, mentor, and role model in the veterinary medical community.

Biggest Inspiration: My parents/family have always been my #1 inspiration. As a son of immigrants, I am aware of all the sacrifices that my parents made for me to become a doctor. I work hard every day to make them proud. I dedicate all of my personal wins to my parents/family. I aspire to give my parents the life they deserve during their old age.

Current Passion Project: I am the co-founder of the Latinx Veterinary Medical Association (LVMA), which is the first non-profit organization representing Latinx people in my profession, across the US & Canada. Check us out: @latinxvet

Fun Fact: I was a water birth! ALSO most people call me "Juancho," which is the nickname that was given to me at birth by my family.

How do you get over the troubled times? WORKING OUT! I am a huge advocate for mental health and eliminating the stigma. Fitness has helped me stay sane during many difficult times throughout my life. Looking good helps you feel even better!

Do you have any advice for others interested in entering your field? Keep chugging along and never give up! At times you may feel that you aren't smart enough, that you don't deserve to become a doctor, and that you are alone due to the lack of representation. Foster all of those feelings so it lights a fire under your ass - go out and make your dreams come true! You are more capable than you think.

Any other piece of advice, motivational quote, or message you would like to share? "Querer es Poder" This was my father's campaign slogan when he ran for Mayor of Bogota in 1995.  It means "Where there is a will there's a way - believe and you will achieve”
